Luxury Bathroom

Take a Vacation in Your Own Home.

Your bathroom is your place to escape from it all – or, at least, it should be.  When it comes to designing bathrooms, a lot of people opt for the beach theme. Beach themes are very common no matter how far inland you live. But this article isn’t about that kind of bathroom. This article is about a true spa-like place that you can really relax in. The kind of bathroom you won’t want to leave. The kind of bathroom that you’ll want to hang the “do not disturb” sign on the locked door.

First, visualize the things you’d like to have in your bathroom and make a list of them. You’ll want to share this list with the professionals at S&W Cabinets who will bring the dream to life for you. By doing this, you can be sure you’ll achieve your ultimate relaxation space and know your bathroom will be exactly like you want it to be. Ahava Dead Sea Salts

For some, cool tones evoke feelings of calm and cleanliness. While others prefer warm tones that make them feel cozy and at-home. Some people are all about minimalism, which can definitely help reduce stimuli and stress, while others love a richness in details that can bring other emotions to life for them. There is no wrong way to build your personal bathroom get-away, but it is important to define your vision before proceeding. Pinterest is a great place to get some ideas. The more materials and reference photos you have, the more it helps your professionals understand your vision. With a better level of understanding comes an easier time transforming your space into your private getaway.

If any aspect of the vision is going to be a struggle, realize that there is more than likely a number of workarounds – some of which you may love more than the original idea! No matter what the case is, the details can be tweaked and changed, but you should always feel confident and in love with the big picture and final product.

When it comes to great bathroom designs, the inspiration is endless. Data even shows that the quality of your bathroom has an effect on your home’s overall value too. Despite being one of the smaller rooms, bathrooms require equal, if not more design power when compared to larger spaces in your home. From paint color to fittings, vanities and lighting, the list of factors to consider will multiply before you can say “bubble bath.”

Free Standing Bathtub

Heated TubMost people feel that the tub plays the most important roll in the ultimate bathroom. With so many options to choose from these days, you shouldn’t have a problem finding what you want. A tub with lots of room to relax and a few heated jets would be the perfect end to a tiresome day. Or maybe you’d like a free-standing extra deep soaking tub? Your choices are only limited to your budget and imagination.

Shower Tower

If you have room for a separate shower, great! If not, you can still add that touch of “spa” with a jets in the wall. A more affordable option is a jetted Shower Tower, like this one from Anzzi

There a a lot of different designs and options out there!

Etsy Spa Basket

And let’s not forget about all of the extra little things you’ll have to have for pampering yourself, like soaps, scrubs, candles, lotions, etc. You’ll also need a pretty basket to put it all in and set close to your tub as well.

Now let’s talk about bathroom vanities. Will you want a single bowl or a double bowl? If you have the space go for as much countertop as you can. You can even opt for a floating vanity. These mount directly on the wall leaving you room underneath for anything you’d like, or nothing at all for a clean, modern look. Talk to S&W Cabinets about a custom vanity to fit your style and space.

And let’s not forget about storage. You’ll want some nice cabinets and/or a pantry to keep everything neat and out of site. Shelving adds a nice touch for setting out spa-like items.

Taj Mahal

The Many Uses of Beautiful Marble.

Marble is used in monuments, crushed stone, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and much more.

Marble occurs in a very wide range of colors. Marble formed from the purest limestone is white in color. Iron oxide impurities in the limestone will produce a yellow, orange, pink or red color. Clay minerals can produce gray colors that often occur in bands after the compositional stratification of the original limestone. Abundant bituminous materials can produce dark gray to black marble. Marble that contains serpentine often has a green color.

Marble is a material used in prestige architecture as well as interior design.

Ok, so you don’t live in the Taj Mahal. Neither do I, but I really love the beauty of the Marble facade.

The Taj Mahal is one of the most beautiful and famous buildings in the world. It was built between 1632 and 1653 as a mausoleum for Mumtaz Mahal, the third wife of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Marble was used extensively throughout the building, including the marble domes and towers.

Marble Lincoln Monument

The Abraham Lincoln Monument

Daniel Chester French, the leading American sculptor of the day, created the famous statue of Lincoln which dominates the interior. He remarked, “We all have an inner consciousness of how Lincoln looked or must have looked, and this was mine.” The memorial plans originally specified a 12-foot bronze statue, but it proved out of scale for the huge building. The finished statue is 19 feet tall, carved of 28 blocks of white Georgia marble. French later had special lighting installed to enhance the figure. Visitors sometimes ask if the hands have special significance, such as forming the letter “A” in sign language, but there is no indication French intended it.

The Lincoln Memorial suits its surroundings so well that it seems to have always been there. The city’s master designer, Pierre L’ Enfant, could hardly have imagined a better architectural anchor to the west end of the Mall, the grassy area he visualized between the Capitol Building and the Potomac River. Lincoln Memorial

New York architect Henry Bacon modeled the memorial in the style of a Greek temple. The classic design features 36 Doric columns outside, symbolizing the states in the Union at Lincoln’s death. The building measures 204 feet long, 134 feet wide, and 99 feet tall, with 44-foot columns. It blends stone from various states: white Colorado marble for the exterior, Indiana limestone for the interior walls, pink Tennessee marble for the floor, and Alabama marble for the ceiling.

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial

Jefferson Memorial

The Thomas Jefferson Memorial is a presidential memorial in Washington, D.C., dedicated to Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826) and is one of the most important of the American Founding Fathers.  His accomplishments are many: main drafter and writer of the Declaration of Independence, member of the Continental Congress, Governor of the newly independent Commonwealth of Virginia, American minister to King Louis XVI and the Kingdom of France, first U.S. Secretary of State under the first President George Washington, the second Vice President of the United States under second President John Adams, and also the third President (1801–1809), as well as being the founder of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, Virginia.

You can have marble walls, marble staircases, marble mantles or marble countertops. Marble bathrooms are quite beautiful and Cultured Marble is much more affordable.

Space saving ideas

Space Saving Ideas: Pull-Out Storage.

Let’s face it – we’re all busy, and some of us more than others! What we need are things in our lives to make things less cluttered, easier and faster for us so we have more time to focus on the important things, like spending time with family and friends for example.

One of the things I’m talking about are space saving ideas like pull-out storage for the kitchen or bath. We know all to well what it’s like to try to find a bowl, a pan, or maybe even a cookie sheet in the bottom of a dark cabinet. It’s not fun and it’s hard on your knees. Pull-out storage is the answer and getting it installed is a lot easier than you might think.

Let’s go over a few of the most popular items.

Assortment of Backsplash Options

The traditional 4-inch backsplash or something else?

When we think of a backsplash, we generally think of the traditional 4-inch backsplash. Is there anything wrong with that? Of course not.

Today’s backsplash can still be a traditional 4-inch backsplash but you can have a very nice updated version of that instead of the rounded off top edge that we see in most homes.

Your backsplash can even be a completely separate piece and not molded with the countertop at all. It can even be squared off for a very modern look.

Want a really different look? Try using the squared off backsplash combined with a fully tiled or half tiled wall.

4-Inch Backsplash vs. Full WallOr, maybe you want to forgo the 4-inch splash altogether and go with a fully tiled wall. In this picture, you see where one of our customer has done just that. They chose a beautiful black and gold tile to go with their white custom cabinets and accented with gold cabinet hardware for a striking finish.

Going with a Corian Quartz countertop? You may want to consider bringing it up the wall for a truly customized look.

All good decorators know to always, always, always decorate in odd numbers. This is no different when choosing a color scheme for your kitchen or bath project.

LG High Macs Colors

countertop selections

Choosing the Right Countertop can consume your mind for weeks if you let it. Here are some tips to help you decide.

Let’s cover some of the most popular choices. Quartz, Granite, Marble, Solid Surface, and Laminate.

QUARTZ: is a man made material (also called engineered stone) and is non-porous so it resists staining much better than granite, marble and concrete. It stands up to juice, oil, wine, tomato, coffee and other sources of stains in the kitchen. Quartz countertops are manufactured from 93% quartz (also a component of granite countertops) and a binding resin. They are scratch, heat and stain resistant.

GRANITE: is the traditional favorite for kitchen countertops with thousands of unique colors and patterns, proven durability, and lasting value. Granite is a natural stone that can withstand direct heat from hot pans, nearly impossible to scratch, and is stain-resistant. Most granite colors will need sealing to help prevent stains, although some varieties do not require it. Once sealed, a granite countertop is a low-maintenance material that is difficult to damage. Just follow some simple cleaning procedures.

MARBLE: is beautiful and for some, the epitome of luxury. White marble, like Calacatta and Carrara marble are the most sought after varieties, but a full range of colors are available. Marble is softer than granite, which makes it more susceptible to scratches. Marble countertops do etch easily though and most people mistake etching for staining.  So, you’ll probably want to learn more about how to clean marble and the needed maintenance before installing it, particularly for kitchen countertops. Marble is far less troublesome for bathroom countertops.

SOLID SURFACE: Corian® and Wilsonart®  are popular brands of Solid Surface Countertops.  The blending of acrylic polymers with stone-derived materials (like marble) makes for a durable, versatile, and repairable solid surface kitchen or bathroom countertop. They resist stains pretty well, but are easily scratched by knives or dented by pots and pans and they can be damaged by heat. So what’s the good news? The stains and scratches in Corian® and Wilsonart® can be sanded or buffed away, it can be installed without visible seams, and sinks can be molded right into the surface as one piece. Many patterns and textures are even made to look like stone.

LAMINATE: has come a long way over the last several years and there are some very beautiful colors to choose from as well as edges. While it can’t compete with granite or quartz, the similarities as far as looks are amazing. It’s hard to tell the difference in some cases, not to mention that it is a fraction of the cost. Laminate countertops don’t handle high heats very well and can scratch and chip, but overall they are pretty durable and good choice for anyone on a budget. At the price of laminate, you can afford to replace it every few years for a different look.

Stop by our Showroom any time to take a look at the many samples of these materials that we have in stock. Our highly trained professionals are here to help.

Cabinet Hinge

What are the benefits of having soft closing doors & drawers?

There are several so lets start with the best one.

  • Silence. Silence is golden when it comes to drawers and doors closing. No more cringing in the morning when you accidentally slam that door while others are still sleeping. You know the consequences when that happens, right?
  • No more pinched fingers. This is especially important if you have little ones. With soft closing door you’ll never have to worry about that again.
  • Contents stay in place. How many times have you slammed that drawer just a little too hard? You know what happens, right? The contents go everywhere and your well organized drawer ends up looking more like a junk drawer.
  • Extends the life expectancy of your cabinets.
  • Encourages higher resale value.
  • Compliments your kitchen. If you are going to be spending thousands of dollars on new cabinets, it’s worth spending just a little more to help protect your investment, and your little ones fingers 😉

Another thing to consider are self-closing doors and drawers.

What’s the Difference between Self-Close and Soft-Close Hinges

Self-Close Hinges

Self-close hinges are a type of hinge that has a spring built into it so when you start to close your cabinet door, the spring takes over and pulls the cabinet door closed with a tap.

Soft-Close Hinges

Soft-close hinges, on the other hand, have hydraulics built into them so when you close the cabinet door, the hydraulics take over and ease the door closed silently. The cabinet door appears to glide closed.

Most hinges that are soft-closing are also self-closing, but not all self-closing hinges are soft-closing.

Disadvantages of Soft-Close Hinges

None that we know of.

So whether you go with soft closing doors & drawers or self closing doors and drawers, you’ll be glad you did.

birch dovetailed drawer

What are Dovetail Drawers

In a nutshell, it’s a locking joint that firmly holds the walls of your drawers together. Ensuring a tight grip that will probably last longer than most of us will. These joints are made to last and are found in most well built cabinetry, like the cabinets at S&W Cabinets.

The dovetail ‘locking joint’ is constructed from wedge-shaped channels cut into the wood, that interlock with one another from either side of the door frame or drawer, creating a box. The wedge-shaped pieces are called ‘tails’ and ‘pins,’ and provide a very strong joint that is very resistant to force once the two sides are joined.

Drawers with Dovetails can normally hold much more weight than a joint that is only glued making this an excellent choice for your kitchen drawers.

What are the benefits of having Dovetail Drawers?

This is one of our most asked questions and the answer is quite simple. Dovetail drawers provide longevity. This type of joint is able to withstand much more than the average everyday use. When you consider your cabinet drawers will be opened and closed at least 8 times a day, or over 3,000 times a year, you’ll want joints that will hold up for years and years after you purchase them.

There are quite a few variations of dovetail joints, here are three of the most common types.

1. The “Through Dovetail” exposes the ends of both pieces. Seeing the end grain makes it obvious that the joint is a dovetail.

2. The “Half-Blind Dovetail” can be recognized by the visible end grain on the side but not from the front.

3. The “Blind Dovetail” does not expose any end grain. These are much more difficult to find.
